Hi,

After finally getting zenwalk to run within a virtual PC i accidentally chose text logon instead of the graphical logon. When i logon in text mode (in something called BASH) i can't get the desktop or anything to run (i am completely new to linux).

How can i either get into my normal desktop environment via the text logon, or change the logon type to GUI based so i can just get the to the desktop as soon as i login?

Thank you

Edit the /etc/inittab file and change the run level.

change
id:3:initdefault:

to
id:5:initdefault:

Run level 3 is text mode, and run level 5 is gui mode. You can go back and forth between run levels without editing the default setting in the inittab file by executing the init command and pass it the run level.

chage to run level 3 (text mode)
init 3

change to run level 5 (gui mode)
init 5

You may find that as Zenwalk is Slackware based you might need to change it to id:4:initdefault: instead....dunno for sure but check.

Thanx for the reply :)

After trying to get the right command I eventually managed it but it told me "permission denied" on the /etc/inittab file, so I tried typing /etc/inittab id:5:initdefault and again permission denied. I tried typing init 5 as well but that came up blank, so I tried init 4 (you were right 3Dave) and it ran X11, woohoo :)

So I logged on as root and using the file manager I navigated to the /etc folder, opened the inittab file and edited the default to 4. No permission problems this time :)

After restarting the computer it worked like a charm and I am back to my graphical login screen.

I have been trying linux on and off for a few years but never really got anywhere as I found it too complicated and found I couldn't do everything that I could on Windows, but it seems to have progressed since I last used it. That is the first time I have successfully used commands in Linux, its simple once you know how :)

Hi!
I have the same problem. I cannot logon grafical to my Zenwalk system.
My /etc/inittab tells me, that the default runlevel is 4, but I am still not able to have a grafical login.

What could be the problem?

Hey Kaj,

I'm not exactly sure but what i did was when the command prompt came up I typed "init 4" (without the quotations). This gave me an initial GUI logon so i could access the system in GUI mode. I logged in a root (must be in root to have access to the etc/inittab file). The i changed the mode appropriately, in my case to 4.

If yours is already on 4 then I would suggest trying "init 5" instead, but as your also using Zenwalk I doubt this will work.

If none of that works then I would suggest starting a new thread as it may get more attention. Apart from that I don't know what the problem could be.

Hope that helps

LJR
