I've installed debian on one of my pc's and have it working well with samba, it's desktop environment. I know about terminal. I just want to know how do i change between desktop environment and the black DOS like console?

ok figured it out!

o switch to Console mode

Press ‘Ctrl + Alt + F1′

To switch back to GNOME GUI mode

Press ‘Alt + F7′

You can also open several console screens. For example, if you press CTRL+ALT+F2, you get to the second console, Console screens are available from CTRL+ALT+F1 throuhg CTRL+ALT+F6 for a total of six console screens. You can use only one at a time, but it can be useful to switch between two or three when completing a task in one screen, and reading documentation in a second screen.
