If you have a Linksys router and you do not want to share files, why do you need a server? Does the Linksys router have only one LAN port? Or does it have four? If it has four LAN ports, you can connect to the Internet through it. You would only need the server if you are going to use it to provide services to your LAN, or serve WEB pages either to the LAN or the Internet. If you intend to serve WEB pages to the Internet, you should check your user agreement with your ISP carefully. Most ISP's do not allow this.

you just need to enable ip forwarding over your linux server and put the ip address of the squid server in the browser.
