Hi there guys, this is the first time I am trying to install linux in any variety, so yes I am a newbie; however, I know a great deal about computers so don't think i'm clueless, anyway, here is my problem. I boot from the Suse CD, I click on install (regular) it goes through fine for a few minutes until it hits the line "Suse Installation program v1.3 (c) 1996-2002 Suse Linux AG" it stays at that line for like 5 minutes before it finally continues, is this normal? After it gets passed that it starts hardware detection, it gets to the line "cdrom, 3.3: read cdrom" which takes another good 10 minutes. then it gets to the line searching for infofile which takes yet another 5 minutes. then it copies 32 megs of crap to a ramdisk which takes...sigh...another 5 minutes. then, FINALLY! it loads the install part which takes a good 10 minutes to "probe" my HDD's, FDD's, and mouse. It doesn't detect my mouse(logitech cordless freedom USB). the final problem is that it doesnt allow me to choose which HDD i want to install to(i have 4 of them). it takes one of my 60 gig data drives and it wants to kill the partition! it doesnt even ask if it can kill it! it just does! luckilly i managed to reboot before it did something stupid. well, let me clarify the above rant by listing my problems.
1) the installation takes forever
2) mouse wont detect
3) attempts to delete partitionmy system is a 1.4 gig athlon, 512 ram, gf3, 2x quantum 20gig(one blank, the other with win2k) and 2x WD 60 gig(both data drives, mirrored). all four of these drives are on a hpt370 raid controller on an abit kt7-raid amd 760 board.

there is the following options
1) installation
2) installation with safe settings
3) installation with apic supportthats it

That doesn't sound normal at all.
Did you buy SuSE or download it? If you bought it you should contact SuSE's tech support about those issues.I know with 7.3 I never had any of these problems. I even got to choose disk drives and partitions to use. I can't see why 8.0's install process would be slow and destructive for no reason.

Nah,
That's a real problem. SuSE won't provide
support for that config.
The raid controller is the issue. Is it
supported? I didn't check the hw support
list, but that would explain a lot of your
difficulty.
Bad termination(hw problems) are another.
What NOS were you running with this
configuration before?

I also have a Highpoint 370 (onboard) raid controller .. My hard drive is connected to it. (20 gig WD 7200)
I'm not having the same exact issue you are exactly (slow to load, etc), however, when I choose Installation it goes through all the motions and it locks right after "Loading braille display.." and their is an hour-glass on a black screen. It goes no further.
I have tried everything suggested by SuSE via e-mail and from their known issues and support articles to no avail. The SuSE HW database states that the 370 controller is compatible however I have a theory that the driver shipped with the OS (I bought the pro version on CD) is buggy or doesn't work correctly..

Hi, I downloaded the live eval 8.0.
Well the pc does crash in the boot proccess.
it is locked on "looking for infofile".
on 50 attemps, it booted 2 times after playing in the bios with the usb support.
If I disable the USB support, it doesn't work .
I have as well an AMD Athlon .
I tried to install it on 2 intel machines ... well it works always ...
