OS: SuSe 8.1 Pro
CPU/Ram: Pent II/63.0
Comment:

I tried to install via suggested settings and got the following:

A resizing error has occurred!
Shrinking your Windows partition was not successful....

....check your Windows partition and possibly shrink it by other means.

Question is...
What do I do next?

There may be too much data on the Windows partition to allow shrinking to the size you requested. How large is the hard drive, and how full is it?

Also, what software are you using to resize? Something on Suse? Fips? Partition Resizer? Partition Magic?

Worst case you may have to re-install Windows, using fdisk to create the Windows partition at the desired size from scratch.

C: capacity 14.9 GB
used 5.73 GB
free 9.16 GB
D: (system save)
capacity 3.71 GB
used 924 MB
free 2.81 GB

Something on SuSe, but I can't remember it's name.

Sorry, I have no experience with Suse software. I'd try third-party software to shrink the first partition. Some freeware that can do this are "fips" and "Partition Resizer." A Google search should come up with the homepages for these titles.

It's going to be a little more complex because you have two partitions for Windows already. So you'd have to shrink the first partition, then create a second contiguous partition for "backup" then copy the data from your current "backup" to the new, then delete the old "Backup." To be honest, if it were me I'd re-install Windows, using fdisk to create and format two partitions from scratch. Or you might have luck with a quality comemrcial product such as Partition Magic.

Regarddless, you need to decide how to allot the space between the two operating systems. If the total drive size is 18GB, and you give half to Windows and half to Linux, then you'd make the first partition 7GB or so. Depending on how you use the computer you may want to give one OS more than half of the space. For instance if you install games in Windows, or if you plan on using Linux for editing video... For my use I'd give Windows a much larger partition say 12GB for Windows C:\, 2 GB for Windows D:\, and leave the remaining 4Gb for Linux.

Once you get the Windows partitions straightened out, the Suse installation should create the necessary Linux partitions, or you can create them ahead of time with third-party software such as "Ranish Partition Manager" (freeware).

Since I don't use Linux much and my computer is a mess of partitions (two hard drives, seven installed operating systems...) I keep the Linux partitions as simple as possible. At a minimum you'll need one Linux Swap partition and one Linux file system partition (ext2.fs).

Since your setup is much simpler, you should go ahead and let Suse create the full recommended number of partitions.

I'm sure you have many more questions now that I've confused the heck out of you... But I hope it has been some help.

Keep posting back,
-Bob
