Hi all

I am a newbie as far as linux is concerned,
and Im looking for some general help.

I have just obtained and installed SUSE 9.0
and I am very very proud to say it ran
without a hitch. Needless to say I have
bottle of wine open.

What I am looking for is specific
instructions in how to update drivers for
the OS and I miss my wheel mouse !!!

Specificly for the wireles optical mouse
and keyboard. And does any one know a real
good browser for this os, or is the base
Konqueror good enough ?

I have installed all the available updates
and kernel through the gizmo manager
whatevr it is LOL but cant seem to get them
setup and woring correctly.

And after the firts 2 hours I must say I am
impressed. So far

XP Power user but a Linux newbie.

The first bit of help is cap the bottle of wine... if you're a newbie you'll get into more trouble than enough with Linux without the grog helping you along.

Cheers (hic)

Thanks for the reply Ewen ( hic )

Just darn proud I got it loaded and running first pop. Thats enough to throw a party on its own.

But not exactly what I was looking for.

This is a world on its own, but I think i can understand why those who know how to use it rave about it.

For open source OS its fabls, I think there will be a few late nights with the some manuals when I can get them.

Actualy im on the secod bottle and almost no hair left.

HIC ahhhhhhhhhhhhh helppppppppppp

Cogratulations Janos... like you I have recently migrated to Linux and I am enjoying it too, but beware you will need more than a bottle of good wine to get you out of some of the problems which will inevitably arise.

If only it was as easy as Windows (sigh).

Regards

HIC

Tell me something i havent noticed, LOL

Holy mozez Its like going back to school, I havent left windows as yet, but I do like to learn and I am keen to find out what all the fuss is about.

I do admit one thing SUSE is huge in its form, almost 2 gig in size, but gee wiz is it strong.

And it looks awsome, the dsktop is just fantastic.

I also have the full cut server version as well, Im not brave enough to try that just yet.

Just cal me mc chicken.

Did you say as easy as windows !! Gees I wish XP was easy, but I do know what you mean.

I havetn had this much fun since win 3.1

Regards

I like your signature... the alternative is "keep on fixing it until it is broke."

Click on my name if you feel like the odd bit of correspondence... I'm not much help in this system but a good yarn goes s long way. I use MD10 and I like it (so far).

Regards.

Wheelmouse for newbies:

Log in as root; open the file etc/X11/XF86Config with a simple texteditor. And add the following line to the section "inputdevice" where the mouse is defined:

Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"

Save the file and log out as root;

The wheel should work fine after a restart of the x server.

A good webbrowser is firefox, which you can find at www.mozilla.org. When you got it working, don't forget to enable the "autoscrolling" option, which can be found
at the menu tools -> options. Just see
what happens when you press on the wheel and move the mouse over the screen.

Most certainly will do that, im nw to this also and as you said a good yarn does go a long way.

I have SUSE 9.0 AND SERVER DISCS, they were free on a mag so i decided to try it.

Im not game to load the server to be honest. lol MD10 I presume you mean Mandrake ??

Did you say keep on fixing !!! LOL Boy dont I know that side of things. UGGHHHHHHHHHH

Guido !!!

Thankyou very much for your instructions thats exactly what Iv been looking for, I will try and what you have instructed.

I have it running on a dual boot configuration on my test rig with win ME, next time I feel like reloading my personal rig I will try it on a raid setup. LOL

Im not sure if that is being brave or am i just a begger for punsihement.

I have heard of fire fox and have used it with XP but for some unknown and ungodly reason it crashed after 2 days and I coldnt fix the problem. I HAVE NO IDEA WHY !!

No matter what I did I coldnt fix it, Install, Unistall, clean directiries in auto and manualy, but just could not fix it.

I will see how I go with it in this form. Looking forward to this. LOL

Thankyou.
