Hello all,

I am a complete beginner when it comes to the linux world, and would like to try SuSE 9.0 on my laptop. i have downloaded the boot iso from the suse website and ran the boot cd in my laptop. the bad part comes when i actually try to install. first i have to do a manual install because the boot cd will not recognize my wireless adapter ( Linksys WPC11 v 3.0 ). when i try to load the network module i cannot find my particular card, or any linksys cards for that matter. would anyone know where i can get a network module with wireless devices on it, or how can i create a module with the linux driver that i found on the linksys site.

all help is appreciated.

TIA

-C-

Although SuSE is a good distribution, unlike some others (Debian, Redhat/Fedora) the only way you can install it for free is to install it over a network unless you are trying their "Live CD". Perhaps you could try another distro that you can download and install ENTIRELY from CDs - that would take your network card problem out of the picture at least for the install. Then once installed you could try to get your wireless card to work. The driver I found on the linksys site appears to be in source code form only (linux-wlan-ng-0.1.14-pre1.tar.gz) so you'd need Linux installed in order to compile it - but compiling can be a real challenge *if* everything doesn't go smoothly so I'd recomment finding an RPM or something pre-compiled. The readme file in the source code from the Linksys site lead me to this FAQ here ... just search that file for RPM or Debian and you'll discover Redhat and Debian are supported. The Linux Documentation Project - for Wireless Networking is also your friend.
Good luck... you're confronting one of the stumbling blocks with Linux - lack of driver support from hardware manufactures. Try a couple approaches and keep asking around - hopefully you'll get it to work.
