surfing with ssh

You mean use SSH to connect to a proxy server, or what? You'll only be secure on your own LAN. Once you pass the proxy, unless the site on the other end has an SSH server you can connect directly to, you're no longer encrypted.
All you have to do is use SSH's tunnel option to connect a port on 127.0.0.1 to your proxy, then tell the browser that the proxy is on localhost at whatever port you specified.
