What are you using to dial/connect? Which ISP? Have you checked your /var/log/messages for any errors (eg is it pppd thats failing)?

Have you tried logging on by hand? Try using "minicom", point it at your com port, type atz to reset the modem, then type atdt 12345678 where the number is your ISPs phone number, after handshaking it should prompt you for your username, password and protocol (reply ppp to the last one). If all goes OK you should now have a working net connection.I have had a similar problem, as soon as I logged on I received spurious random ascii characters in minicom window and it then dropped the line. This was due to my ISP not supporting scripted logins. I just phoned them up and got hold of another one of their phone numbers that did!
