You would be wasting you time installing Vista on that. I can assure you it will not be worth it and you will be unhappy with performance.

Consider Ubuntu or the Kubuntu to be a bit faster. Many distros offer a live cd. They are good to test with. Slax, puppy, knoppix and even Solaris based OS's are offered on live CD's.

I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you goober.

I'm sure the Dimension 2400 is more than capable of running Vista without problems - provided the RAM is upgraded to at least 1GB, similar goes for the display adapter, if he wants to have stuff like Aero Glass, Flip3D & DWM thumbnails.

Windows Vista Premium (Recommended Requirements):

* 1GHz 32-bit(x86) or 64-bit(x64) processor

* 1 GB of system memory

* A graphics processor that runs Windows Aero (DirectX 9 class graphics processor that supports WDDM Driver, Pixel Shader 2.0 in hardware and 32 bits per pixel with big enough graphics memory)

* 128MB of graphics memory

* 40GB HDD with 15 GB free space

* DVD-ROM Drive

* Audio output capability

* Internet access capability

I suggest that the minumum setting for Vista are like any other MS install. Yes, you can get the OS to work on the minimum specs. That doesn't mean you can use any apps. I have the beta versions of Vista and feel that you will not be happy unless a major change in the OS is included. We have tested some very similar models on Vista and determined it to be a failure for a business case.

It is further unlikely that Dell will provide any bios updates or offer and FRU or other motherboard upgrades if firmware or component failure is found.

Consider buying a new computer that is Certified to work with Vista.

Linux Mint (http://lt.k1011.nutime.de/) has what you need-out of the box- (java, codecs, et al)...
