Stress/performance test

I need to perform stress test on the server (i'm using SUSE Linux).

Can Someone suggest me tools which can be useful for that.

what do you want to stress exactly? If you want to know if it will freeze up during alot of network transfers, Get a program like limewire and maxamize the uploads feature and share something. Download alot at the same time and let it run until you are comfortable that suse wont crash. You could also use a winblows stress test (i dont know of any) with wine.

We have a server up running a test software. i need to test how many users it can handle at one time and and what is the maximum downloading and uploading speeds...so that i can restrict users from logging in if the server has already too many logged on.
