Stopping X Server

Running Ubuntu 9 with a GeForce 9800, but it wont let me go dual screen without saving over the configuration file and restarting x server. how do i do that? (btw when i try to save over the config file, it wont let me access it)

To stop x server
Press: CTRL-ALT-F1
Type: sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
To restart x server
Type: sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start
Press: CTRL-ALT-F7
To save config file
Sudo first!
Command: gksudo gedit /etc/x11/xorg.conf
