If you want Star Office to be available to all users use /usr/local/soffice.
And I prefer RH 7.2 over Mandrake 8.1, so I don't think you wasted your money.
Mandrake run much slower then RH on all my pc's,(MD is optimized for pentium processors ?) I also don't like the "We know what's best for you" approach from Mandrake. I didn't even like the Mandrake install, to fancy for me. Also there is so much more information on the internet about RH then there is for Mandrake.
In general RH has more of a "linux feeling" to it than Mandrake.
But I'm sure lots of people are gonna disagree with me.

The problem is Mandrake has alot more drivers for sound and what not. But Red Hat did recognize my VooDoo3 card and Mandrake didn't. My redhat started to fail booting up. It was having trouble with my SCSI card for my burner. Mandrake didn't have any trouble. But I must agree redhat is way faster than mandrake. I do like redhat alot but I need my burner to work.
