Hello guys; Well i've installed squid on my RedHat 9 box, configured it, but somehow i can't start it, whenever i start the service it gives me the following error /etc/init.d/squid:line 162 aborted $SQUID -K check >/dev/null 2>&1 I did some research, someone told me to set the visible_name variable in squid.conf which solved his problem, but still no luck. I would appreciate any help.

make sure the hostname set on your machine is represented by a name to address mapping: To make it easy type: vi /etc/hosts add a line with your ip and hostname like: 192.168.1.1 firewall.local
This should fix your squid cache initialization error. You can initialize your cache with squid -z
