I have just installed Fedora on an AMD 550 and have found it very slow. Am I doing something wrong or does Fedora require a faster machine. I opened up Networks today and it took about a minute to open up.

Something is wrong and may be easily fixable but it would probably be hard to pin it down if you are not familiar with the system. Unless you can supply better and more specific information, I'd suggest trying different distros until you find one that works well on your hardware as soon as it is installed.

One source of extreme slowness is if your hard drive has DMA disabled. You can check it by doing "hdparm /dev/hda" as root, assuming your Linux drive is the primary master. If you don't see a line like "using_dma = 1 (on)", tell us so we can help fix it.

You're using KDE, aren't you? KDE is slow even on fast machines. Try a different window manager and see if it feels faster. I recommend Blackbox, Enlightenment, or even Gnome.

dma is on. I ran Partition Magic and noticed that there is only 2 partitions and 1 is 100 meg. I have a feeling this may be incorrect.

Is the 100MB partition /boot or swap, maybe? Both of those would be fine on a 100MB partition - although swap would be a bit crowded.

It's probably just the Xwindows enviroment.
I'm using a P200mmx with Window Maker(takes up about 1-2 megs of ram when running) as my default window manager/desktop and it is very snappy indeed. Almost as quick as
win98 on my P400.

my system is fast. I have Libranet 2.7
Classic on a 233 mhz processor, ATA33 HDD,
128 MB Simm ram using XFCE.

Make sure that you don't have any uneccessary daemons running that you don't use like sendmail, postgres etc. Trying a lower colour depth may help too.

I'd go with 3Dave's uneccessary daemons suggestion first.

A lighter window manager will improve performance allot but it still shouldnt be that slow with KDE, I like fluxbox on older hardware.

I had the same problem with Fedora 3.
I turned off the unnecessary daemons and the ped it up a bit, but the system still dragged (using KDE). I started using Gnome and everything is OK now.

On other distros like Mandrake and (now) Ubuntu I use KDE without any slowdown. Don't know what the difference is.

Hi,

I have a tip. If you aren't satisifed with Fedora's performance on your hardware, even after tweaking, try VectorLinux. Even if you are satisfied, if your HDD has enough room you may still want to try it for comparsion purposes.
