Hi everybody. I was wondering if anyone could tell me how I can get control of my sound card on Red Hat Linux 4.2. My cdrom is functioning and runs when I access it under X windows, but I get no sound. I am trying to play music cd's. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Fist you have to be sure that the kernel itshelf has been compiled with sound support.
If not you have to recompile it.

Then you have to run sndconfig(as root ,and not in X)

Finally (I am not sure for this) for music CDs the CDROM drive should be connected with the sound card(I mean the hardware parts)

chmod 755 /dev/dsp

basically you need to be able to write to dsp Of course, if it doesn't work for root it won't work for anyone.
