OK,after posting about 2 weeks ago and struggling to get X running I am now stuck. Intel said that for my onboard video to work to choose the 810 or 830 video card when I run xf86config. After every usable configuration and switching modes with ctrl-alt-+ I get very close to it running correctly then suddenly words and boxes overlap eachother hundreds of times. Now, near as I can figure it's just the plain wrong driver. My big problem now is when I reboot it boots directly to the GUI and hangs. If I press ctrl-alt-backspace I cannot get back to the prompt to run xf86config again, It actually reboots the computer and the vicious cycle begins again. I would really like to get back to my nightly ritual of trying to configure X to run properly, as I have to come to realize this is the only function Linux is designed to perform.

...Or I may possibly buy a video card and hope Linux picks it up when it searches for new hardware on startup, will this work?

Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Chris

When booting, at the lilo prompt type:
linux init 3
to boot into text mode.

To make it a permanent change, edit /etc/inittab:
id:5:initdefault:
to
id:3:initdefault:

Thanks! - That is what I needed...
But... I have a difficult time getting to the lilo screen. Like I said, after the last time I tried to configure X, the second X "starts", there is a light blue screen with green bands on the top. Hung up like a Pinto in a mudpuddle.

I can get to a lilo promt maybe 1 out of 15 tries. :(

I'm about to give up and be a slave to MS forever.

Redhat 80 uses redhat-config-xfree86

so make sure you type at command prompt

redhat-config-xfree86

and do not use xf86config it is very basic and it uses out to date config files..

That is what Red Hat support said but that command brings up the GUI, which does not work because it is not configured properly.

What am I doing wrong?

I'm so confused.

The lilo prompt is before you even start booting the OS! After turning on your PC and it has detected your IDE devices, start tapping the TAB key. At some point it will pause booting and give you a list of kernels etc which you can boot (the list may contain entries like linux, floppy, failsafe, windows etc). It is at this point when you you type "linux init 3"

Alternatively, if you have a network, I find it quite useful to telnet/ssh in from another PC in order to configure it when things go pear-shaped.

3Dave, Rambo - you guys are the awesome. Does It matter if I am rumming GRUB? I assume you hit the TAB key before the bootloader starts? I have only seen lilo a couple of times while frantically hitting keys to get back to the command promt. I will try this tonight and cross my fingers. I wil also use redhat-config-xfree86 instead of xf86config. Prehaps I will have better results.

I'm so new to this and believe it or not do a lot of reading about it, but I notice if you miss one detail...

I would also like to say that this forum is the best I have ever come across. It has the most helpful and quick responses from the nicest people. Your advice is greatly appreciated. Someday I will return the favor when I am more knowledgable.

Grub...lilo...it should work with either.

Just to make it 100% clear, when you are presented with the list of boot options (eg linux, windoze etc)...that's when you type in "linux init 3".

Using the tab key just helps a little as it should stop the boot countdown. In fact, I think any key stroke will stop it, but tab gives you a list of boot options if you are not using a graphical boot manager.

OK - I'm a little slow. When I boot my machine the Intel screen comes up, then the Grub bootloader. Two options are MS DOS (Windoze XP) and Red Hat Linux. When I select Red Hat Linux the boot sequence for Linux runs.

I understand this part: Just to make it 100% clear, when you are presented with the list of boot options (eg linux, windoze etc)...that's when you type in "linux init 3".

What I am fuzzy on is lilo. I installed GRUB as my bootloader during installation. Yet I have seen lilo. Just...can't...get...there...

Right now it's a mystery to me. I think I need to be sitting in front of the box to actually figure this out. I'm sure you'll see me back !

When you are presented with the two options, before you select anything, you should be able to type in an entry too.
