i have red hat linux. sometimes i see software that says its for a certain version of linux like mandrake or or whatever. will software that says its for a certain type of software work for all types of linux?

Bill2000, If you read the system requirerments and you have the versions of gnome & glibc and that stuff it should work fine.

Your directory structure may be wrong, though. Slackware has problems installing RedHat RPMs because the glibc files aren't in the right place. Watch out for that.
