Hello, I've tried all I can think of to get CommuniGate to relay smtp
email so people I host can use the php mail() function. However despite
my efforts mail in the que for sending through smtp times out.
CommuniGate resolves the mail servers dns names and IPs but returns a
error of 'No response from "mail server here"'. I have already
unblocked the following tcp ports: 106,110,8100,25,143,8010,and 674 but
to no avail. I have made sure the mx dns records for my domain
johnscompany.net are in order as well. I am running CommuniGate version
4.2.9 PPC and am using the linux distro YellowDog Linux 4.0.1 as well
as Apache 2.0.51, php 4 and mysql 3.xx. Any ideas why the mails aren't
sending? Do I need to unblock some more ports? Any help is greatly
appreciated.

Thanks!

Nice, blank Website! At least it was when I tried to visit!

Anyway, have you tried portscanning yourself to verify that you have an SMTP server listening on port 25? Actually you could just try establishing a telnet connection to port 25 to see if the connection is accepted. If it's not, then either your software isn't configured to provide SMTP service, or you have something interfering with communications to port 25. Once you can establish a connection to that port, the rest should be a simple matter of tweaking configuration options.

Keep in mind that many SMTP servers are now defaulting to a much more strict set of operating guidlines in order to avoid being used as an open-relay by spammers, etc. Again, most SMTP servers have configuration options that will allow you to tweak the functionality to fit your needs. I know I'm being fairly general but most of this should help you in determining whether or not you even have an SMTP daemon listening. Not being familliar with CommuniGate, I'm assuming it has a built-in SMTP server and doesn't rely on some other local SMTP server process to be already running such as Postfix, Sendmail, etc. Also, if CommuniGate does try to bind to port 25 and some other process has already bound to it (such as another SMTP server), that may be causing you problems. Anyway, good luck!
