Slow Samba with XP on Rhat9 & Suse

When writing to files from Xp to samba ver 3.0+ on Rhat 9, Suse9.1, and Rhat pro workstation it is very slow. But works fine with samba 2.2.5 on Rhat 8. Win NT will write to any version with no speed variation. This only occurs when creating a file and writing to it. I wrote a small program that writes random text to file. As an example From Xp to samba 3.0 a 7.1 meg text file took 40 seconds to create. From Xp to samba 2.2.5 it took 3 seconds. From Win NT to either of the 3 versions it took 3 seconds. It seems XP is the issue but only with samba 3.0 or better and only when creating a file and writing to it. All the boxes were P4's with 512 meg or more ram. The only tweeking I did was to disable the XP firewall which didn't help. Does anyone have any ideas as to what xp is doing, or did microsoft build in some intentional incompatabilty?
