Hello,

I am using Debian Linux & a Cayman 3220H router. The installation/network configuration went well, but the internet navigation is incredibly slow, today I saw with the toeast.net speed test my DSL connection with Linux is slower than with a 56 K modem and on the same router with Win 98 & the Opera browser about as fast as a T1! How is this possible?

I tried to change the settings of the resolv.conf file since it contains the IP address of my router. I believe this is wrong, it should contain the IP address of the DNS server of the ISP ...? I tried to edit the file, but when I rebooted the computer the file was like before ...

Does anybody know what to do to speed up Linux?

Lou

if resolv.conf gets reset u might be using a dhcp server that sends this info to your dhcp client on your linux box, that then modifies resolv.conf.

first of all; you dont need to reboot after changing resolv.conf
2nd; check if you have any errors on your nic with ifconfig
3rd; change resolv.conf to your actual nameservers and try if the connection gets better without rebooting.
4th; make sure theres no other pc with your ip on the same network.
5th; if u dont need dhcp dont use it :)

Hello Armin,

Thank you.

How do I stop the DHCP client in Linux?

There are 2 computers connected to this
router and both have a different IP ...

I "discovered" that there is a program called
pppoeconf to set the NIC appropriately,
but when I run it it stops without doing
anything because it does not receive any
response from the "Acccess Concentrator" of
the ISP (??!!) or the modem is used by some
other connection (I have no modem, only this
DSL router ...)

I run also ifconfig and to me everything
looks fine there, it is conform with the
Linux documentation I am reading. Of course
there must be some setting problem somewhere
because it is not possible that the SPARC 5
hardware is that much worse than the Win 98
PC clone ...

Best regards

Lou
