he "real" linux, as you called it, is actually the text mode and the command interpretor that you detest.
Anyway, to start the GUI just type "startx", But please do yourself a favour and run the gui oonly as a regular user and never as root!
To boot directly in a graphical enviroment edit the file /etc/inittab and search for a line that contains the word "initdefault" and that isn't commented out. In that line between 2 colonswill be a number, in your case this will be 3. change it to 4 or 5 and save it. Read the file carefully and it will thell you the exact number that should be placed there. I't version-dependent.
The next time you will reboot it will go automaticly into a GUI.
As I can see you are a newbie so here is a bit of additional information:
to edit that file type:
"emacs /etc/inittab"
make the changes
to save it type:
"Ctrl+x", "Ctrl+s"
to exit the editor type:
"Ctrl+x", "Ctrl+c"
or use mc (started with "mc") if you've installed it at install time. You will know to work with it; It's similar to "Norton Commander" and the later "Total Commander".
I wish you lunk with your new "linux career" and learn patient. You will have to learn a lot.
Alex.

FYI Slackware uses runlevel 4 for a GUI as opposed to the more popular runlevel 5, so the line in /etc/inittab should read:
id:4:initdefault:

Just make sure that "startx" works before making the change....
