Hi
I'm having difficulties getting sound back on Slackware 9.1
When i first installed Slackware 9.1 - the default kernel had the sound stuff working just fine - but it was missing a few acpi stuff so i recompiled the kernel with ACPI support stuff in it - now i have acpi but dont have sound anymore even though i didnt touch the sound stuff when i was configuring the kernel (i used the default config that got installed when i first installed Slackware)

i even installed the ALSA stuff but i still get /dev/dsp no such device

any suggestions?

You need to configure or activate the sound for your soundcard when you re-compile a kernel again. You can't just leave it the way it is since the default of the soundcard may not be right one for your system...

You need to head over to www.kernel.org and read the instruction on how to re-compile your kernel. You first need to decide which version you want to compile, download it from www.kernel.org (or it could be on your distro CDs), unpack it, read the INSTALL or README, compile it, install it, and test it out to make sure it works!!!

okay i got sound working
guess slackware does stuff a little differently from the other distros
anyways now new problem or rather simple annoyances.
while playing an mp3 using xmms and i try to forward or search - it seems to get stuck
like its banging for a few seconds and some times when there's like a high note - it cant seem to cope with it and i get something distorted.

i'd really like to fix those problems - but if not - i can live with it.

any help would be apreciated - thanks
