Hi folksm

Just finished installing Slackware 11.0 from "Slackware-11.0 install DVD". On reboot by pressing [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[Del] it failed to boot hanging on;

GRUB Loading stage1.5
GRUB Loading please wait
Error 17

I discovered grub not installed yet.

I made following test.

Booted up the PC with a LiveCD. On terminal:

# fdisk -l
/dev/sda1 *
/dev/sda2 /
etc.

# mount /dev/sda1 /media/sda1
# ls /media/sda1
README.initrd
System.map-ide-2.4.33.3
System.map
config
config-ide-2.4.33.3
diagl.img
vmlinuz
vmlinuz-ide-2.4.33.3

grub not installed.

I have to find grub.img and get it installed there. I think I can find it and rawrite.exe on Internet. Another problem is this PC does not have floppy drive.

Any suggestion? TIA

A quick fix would be if you can lay your hands on a Windows 2000 or Windows XP CD. Boot up using the CD and select 'Repair' when prompted. Then at the command prompt, type FIXMBR. This will fix your Master Boot Record and you should be good to go.

I'm not sure if there is a free/open source equivalent to FIXMBR. Anyone?

From my experience of slack v10 and earlier lilo tends to be the default boot loader (haven't looked at v11 yet). Check your /etc/lilo.conf to make sure that you have:
boot=/dev/sda
and not hda or other, then run lilo again to write it to your MBR. Are you able to chroot into the system OK?

Hi 3Dave,

I don't have /etc/lilo.conf on boot=/dev/sda
This is a new installation. /dev/sda1 is /boot and tagged "*"

During installation it asked whether I need installing LILO but did not offer other choice - GRUB. I think LILO is Slackware default

I can't boot Slackware. I can boot the PC with a Linux LiveCD but have no idea on its fix. Neither I have floppy drive on this PC.
