Comment:

If anyone knows, what could possibly be the
benefit of single user mode?

If I try to enter single user mode either from LILO with 'boot: vmlinuz -s' or, once
in Linux with 'telinit 1' I still have to log
in either as root or some other user,
( user@none:) and all file systems are mounted (ro).

Even if I knew what to change/alter due to a
lost passwd for example, I would no be able to write the changes to disk.

What could possibly be done in this circumstance?

It prevent other users from logging in. the network is down during "single level" mode. it may be helpful during some maintenance, but rarely used.
