After installing Madrake 8.1, shut down freezes . It freezes at "shutttingdown interface eth0.
Any thoughts? Thanks

Kathy;
I have Mandrake 8.1 Powerpack and have the same problem! Doesn't matter if I logout first, reboot, or do a shutdown. I have a Toshiba PCX1100U cable modem attached to the DFE-530TX+ pci ethernet card. I am on roadrunner here. I see you are as well. Maybe RR is the problem, eh??? They changed the IP address first part to dhcp. That is when the problem started here.
Just for the sake of completeness, I will give my homebuilt pc specs:Gigabyte GA-7IXEH F2 motherboard
Athlon (tbird) 1.1 Ghz socket A cpu
Duron 1.2 Ghz (spare and original 1 on mobo)
ATI XPert 2000 Pro 32mb AGP
Soundblaster PCI128 audio
ISA secondary parallel port card
Promise Ultra100 pci eide card
dvd-rom drive
Mandrake compatible cdrw drive
2 maxtor 61 gig hdds on promise card
2 wd 60 gig hdds on mobo primary channel
Mandrake installed on hdb
win98se installed on hda
hdb is dedicated to mandrake linux
hda, hdc, and hdd are dedicated to win98se
1.44 fdd
1.2 5.25" fdd (windows/dos only)NEC multisync xv17+ monitor (crt)
MS internet keyboard
Logitech cordless mouseman optical
HP Deskjet 640C inkjet
Panasonic KX-1123 DMP printerI think our commonality will be Roadrunner internet service. I dualboot win98se and mandrake 8.1 using System Commander Personal Edition as my boot manager.
I have to do an improper shutdown (reset or power off). So far, mandrake is repairing itself on bootup.
You and I can't be the only two who either have or had this problem. I do know that the entire northeast ohio (neo) RR region had a problem where only a few could get their ip addy. It was after this, that I noticed that, here on computing.net the ip addy had the dhcp prefix. I think it was 'net' prefix before this neo.rr problem.
I have the host name identical to what win98se assigned: L9N7A2.neo.rr.comOther than the shutdown/reboot, mandrake linux 8.1 powerpack works fine.
I hope someone has figured the solution to this problem out.Charles

Charles, My son has roadrunner and a similar computer to mine. He does not have this problem. He is in another city. He's in Austin.
I, too have my Madrake 8.1 on hdb. I have Win XP on hda. I use a duel boot. Like I said, this is all new to me. Linux setup the boot system for me.
My computer specs (that I know) are:
Dell P 4, 1.5 gig. 256 ram, Two hardrives. hda is 40 gig, (western digital) hdb is 20 gig.(maxtor) Samsung dvd.cdrw, generic cd rom. Nvidia gforce 2 video card,(with tv out), hp 920c printer, not sure about what kind of ethernet card, sony triniton, multiscan G220 monitor.
I see very little similarities is our sytems except for Roadrunner.
Did you set it up as a Lan or as a cable connection? I wondered about that.
It would be nice to get it fixed, wouldn't it.
Kathy

Kathy,
I set it up as a CABLE connection AND used the automatic settings, except for choosing cable, instead of LAN.
Is this the same for you?Charles

Charles, I was able to solve my problem. I unplugged all my USB devices. Then I was able to shut down. I have 4 usb ports. 2 of which are right next to my ethernet connection. After playing around with it I discovered I cannot have any usb device plugged into the port next to the ethernet connection, but I was able to reconnect the devices to the other usb ports.
Do You have USB devices? If so, try disconnecting them and see what happens.
Hope this helps you. I'd be interested to knwo if this solves your issue. Good Luck and post back. thanks.

I had a kodak EZ200 USB camera plugged in (only recognized by windows). I unplugged it, and the problem is solved. Thanks!
Charles
PS: Let this info guide others with the same reboot/shutdown problem in Mandrake Linux 8.1

One other point, is that the camera was plugged into the usb port(s) built onto the motherboard, nowhere near the ethernet card. I am writing this in win98se, and I just confirmed a thought I had: eth0 and both mobo usbs are sharing the same IRQ. I think that this irq sharing might be the culprit, IF a usb device is plugged in.
Charles

I haven't had any shutdown problems with my Toshiba PCX1100U Cable Modem -- that may have something to do with the fact that I can't get it to work under Linux (Red Hat) at all. I don't have an ethernet card, and although Toshiba says on its web site that it doesn't support Linux, I've seen enough ranting to know that some people have gotten the modem to work with the USB port... My question to you is, how? I'm fairly new to Linux, using Windows right now (ME) - can somebody either point me to somewhere that explains how to hook it up, or send me some information on how to do it? I apologize for interupting the thread, but I can't even update right now, or surf, etc. under Linux. (My hope was to get rid of Windows in the end!)
Thanks for any info you may provide.
- Jeff
