For come reason, Red Hat 6.0 and 6.2 have a problem with shared video RAM. I have a Compaq (yeah, don't lecture me again) Presario 5724 with an Intel i810 2x AGP card built onto the motherboard. The problem is that the video RAM is shared with the actual RAM, and Red Hat keeps giving me errors when I try to start XWindows. I know that the shared memory is the problem because of the errors dumped by the X server and the fact that I've had exactly the same problem with a different Compaq with a different video card that shared video memory.
One of my friends had (long ago) added a module to the kernel and everything worked after that. Unfortunately, he knew what he was doing and I didn't. He used an agp.c file that I cannot locate in my linux partition. Anyone have any clue how I can go about adding this module and where I could get the code to begin with?
Really appreciate your time.

modprobe -c, and see if anything looks familiar in your running config. Then start checking /lib/modules. Else, you can always recompile the kernel with the support you need. I was going to say run modprobe -l,
and grep agp, but that is silly, silly-need
the chipset...

The problem is certainly NOT the fact that
memory is shared. I've run several Unices on
systems that shared system memory. The OS
doesn't even know the system is sharing with
the video memory! Your problem lies
somewhere else.. RAMDAC, Card, Adapter,
Clockchip, etc

not necessarily true if memory is being
overvalued. in this case a driver that is
designed especially for this chipset might
correct the problem.
it's possible. also, if this is the case simply undewrvalue your available ram on
card and see if it works.
otherwise ryan is right and you need to reevaluate your configuration elsewhere.
