Register your domain name with a registrar.
Install and configure sendmail ( or a reasonable substitute ).
Look at www.sendmail.org for details.

That answer was so trite as to be useless. First if you want to run your own mail server at home you need a static ip address. Than you can register your domain name. If you can't get a static ip address then you will need to set up a dynamic dns with one of the compaines that will do this for you. Sendmail configuration is usually straight forward for a lan, but for using to connect to the internet is very complicated. You can buy a 800 page book dedicated just to sendmail configuration. Ther are other options out ther , but I haven't used them. Just by the fact that you asked this question shows that your level of sophistication with Linux is at a relatively low level, and so this is perhaps why the above snide answer. Unless you are prepared to spend 6 months (no joke) reading about it in your spare time you are better off using a mail host which will register you domain name for you if all you want is a cool email address. If you have to have an in house solution and this is not a hobby,. then purchase a pre built email server from RealTime solutions or some other such provider.

Good luck

Setting up and email server is fairly easy and unless your a retard it will not take you 6 months of reading.

I'm a newbie and I had sendmail up and running in a week.

I suggest using mandrake (one of the easiest versions of linux to use) http://www.mandrake.com

When you install mandrake make sure you install sendmail and webmin(webmin is the easiest way to administer sendmail).

The most difficult part is making sure you do not have and open relay. I would suggest looking into using something that requires pop authentication before it allows smtp.

I am using sendmail with modification I found on this page:
http://poprelay.sourceforge.net/poprelay.html

Good luck and have fun :)
