Hey,

My system: AMD DURON 1.6ghz, 128DDR, 40GB, LAN (256kbs aDSL)...

I'm thinking of installing linux, probably Slackware *latest*, or Redhat 7.3/8. What software do you recomend so that I can manage my server, and enable a very stable webserver. My home-network uses, WIN XP PRO. Is linux the good way to go?, I want to host my domain (ozane.net) on this machine. I will be assisted by a medium linux user.

thanks,

You can run a very stable and very poplular webserver on linux. It is called Appache and you can get it at www.appache.org or from the red-hat cd as an RPM file (which is kind of .exe file). I use Appache for my webserver (www.crackus.tk) and I have no problems with it. I am a medium linux user and I had no problem setting it up. I think that linux is the right way to go :)

I would go with slackware as those versions of redhat are getting rather long in the tooth now. Slackware also has a reputation for being fast and stable.

BTW it's apache and not appache!

How about Webmin http://www.webmin.com/ for server management, and Virtualmin http://www.webmin.com/index8.html for subdomain management? You will still need to install all the server daemons you plan on using (Apache, sendmail, ftp, etc.) but webmin and virtualmin will make administering them a whole lot easier.
