OS: Mandrake 9.2
CPU/Ram: 700Mhz
Comment:

I recently upgraded my Mandrake
installation from 9.0 to 9.2. After the
installation was finished,
I entered "cdrecord -scanbus" in the
console. The result I got showed only my
Teac CD Burner, and not my Teac CDROM.

0,0,0 0) 'TEAC ' 'CD-W540E '
'1.0C' Removable CD-ROM
0,1,0 1) *
0,2,0 2) *
0,3,0 3) *
0,4,0 4) *
0,5,0 5) *
0,6,0 6) *
0,7,0 7) *
I then took a look at my etc/fstab file and
found that my CDROM drive was being
referenced hdc
instead of scd1 as it was in the previous
installation.

Before I made the change:
none /mnt/cdrom2 supermount
dev=/dev/hdc,fs=udf:iso9660,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1
0 0

After I made the change:
none /mnt/cdrom2 supermount
dev=/dev/scd1,fs=udf:iso9660,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1
0 0

I then rebooted the machine and tried
cdrecord -scanbus again. There was no
change, my CDROM
drive was still not recognized.
I then decided to take a look inside /dev.
I found that ther was a file called "scd0",
but
nothing for "scd1". Is this the source of
my CDROM drive not being recongized, or did
I over
look something else? I did not post my
entire fstab because I did not want this to
be too long and rambling.

Reply:

you do not have to reboot to check out cd drive, just
mount /dev/scd0 /mnt/cd (or /mnt/cdrom)

cdrecord is showing you the "physical" (in this case, emulated) drive. It will not change.

If the cd in the drive is a music cd, you can not mount it, but you can play & copy it - man cdparanoia

Thanks for the above advice. It turns out
that I forgot to check the line in
lilo.conf that starts with "append". When
I first looked at this line it there was a
statement referencing my CDRW drive, but
nothing pointing to my CDROM. I duplicated
the statement refereeing to the CDRW, and
added a new statement for the CDRW drive.
Now when I type "cdrecord -scanbus" both
drives are listed.
