OS: SUSE 9.3
CPU/Ram: 1Gb
Comment:

Hello:
I just finished to install SUSE 9.3 on my dual boot laptop (Dell Inspiron 9200; 17" screen). I used to run Fedora Core 3 prior to installing SUSE.

I changed the screen resolution to 1024x768 to get a sharper image as well as sharper text, but they both remain kind of "fuzzy", and I am unable to increase the screen resolution. The texts look kind of "fat" and the colors not really sharp either.

What do I do to get a better resolution, or why can't I get a better resolution? When I boot on the XP side of my laptop, I do not have this problem, and I did not use to have this problem either when running Fedora Core 3? So I do not think that the specs of my laptop are at fault since both OS used to work very well.

Cany somebody explain to me why this is happening and how I can resolve this isssue.

thanks.
Laura

Can you post up your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file please? It may be calles XF86Config or XF86Config-4 instead, you can tell which is being used by examining the output of:
$ grep /etc/X11 /var/log/*
and you should see something like:
Using config file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf"

How did you try to change the resolution before....with yast? You want to make sure that the resolution for each colour depth you want appears first in the list that looks like:
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

Hello:
Here is the file xorg.conf that you asked for.

About the resolution for each color depth, do I need to have all the modes below 1024x768 selected as well, or just the mode 1024x768.

thanks.

OK, here's what I'd try:

1) First make a backup of xorg.conf
# cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak

2) From Section "Monitor" remove the following lines:
Option "CalcAlgorithm" "CheckDesktopGeometry"
DisplaySize 370 230
UseModes "Modes[0]"

3) Possibly remove the whole of Section "Modes", although this should not be neccesary as you have removed the reference to it from the monitor section.

4) Change all the Modes "640x480" in the Screen section to Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480". Again this is not neccesary but makes things nicer, especially if trying a different colour depth at a later date.

3) Cross your fingers (and maybe your toes too!;) ) and (re)start your X server either with Ctrl&Alt&Backspace or startx.

4) If that doesn't work, in the screen section try changing DefaultDepth 24 to DefaultDepth 16.

Dave3:

I did make the suggested changes in xorg.conf and the screen resolution improved quite a bit.

Changing DefaultDepth from 24 to 16 did not help, so I move it back to 24.

Many thanks for your help on this. I will reply to your suggestions about the screen login with the other message.

thanks.
Laura
