I have just finished setting up SAMBA on my old PII-288MiB running Xubuntu (Fiesty Fawn). However, whenever I try to transfer a descent size file i.e. for eg 13MB the Server/Xubuntu crashes, i.e. it freezes. No mouse/cursor, no keyboard response had to cold-reboot. I am pretty sure I have set the permissions/access rights correctly, as I can read/write and execute, from that particular folder (on xubuntu) with out any problems.
Also, I did noticed that after I installed xubuntu and I ran the update procedure, it completely froze half way through the download, as such had to cold-reboot.
I doubt it is my router as all the other desktop/pc can download files with any problem. Sorry for the long post.
Any help would be appreciated
Thanx

My guess is the Xubuntu. You could try a linux live cd like knoppix or another distro would do the same. As to what part is unknown. You might be able to use command like tools to monitor process's and memory during the transfer to figure it out. It might be the NIC driver to firmware on the MB. I used to work for a maker of computers. We would see all sorts of chip and firmware issues with different OS's. The only OS that the motherboard is tested for is MS. No company that I know of line tests linux. (I mean home systems)
I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you peanut.

Well, I was running ubuntu before xubuntu (I know they are pretty much the same)and it did the same thing while updating. I.E. completely froze during the download of updates (about 135 MB). However, I do understand what you are saying and am thinking of trying a different NIC to see if it makes any difference.
Thanx for suggestion
