Comment:

I am having issues getting my samba server to run on linux redhat 9. I can ping the machine using a windows computer on the network using its ip address, but not the windows name assigned to it by samba. furthermore, i cannot ftp over to it either. I know this is all very vague and generic, but any help will be apprecciated. thanks.

Reply:

Pinging (ICMP) and FTP have nothing to do
with samba (SMB). If you are using static
IPs then add an entry in /etc/hosts. You can
have multiple names pointing to the same IP.
An example line would read:
192.168.0.123 name name.workgroup
