I am having issues getting my samba server to run on linux redhat 9. I can ping the machine using a windows computer on the network using its ip address, but not the windows name assigned to it by samba. furthermore, i cannot ftp over to it either. I know this is all very vague and generic, but any help will be apprecciated. thanks.

Pinging (ICMP) and FTP have nothing to do with samba (SMB). If you are using static IPs then add an entry in /etc/hosts. You can have multiple names pointing to the same IP. An example line would read: 192.168.0.123 name name.workgroup
