currently I am playing with vmware, and using linux enterprise 7 with samba preinstalled.
no matter how much I change the samba.conf file, I cannot see it on my vista network.
I have gone through and changed the vista pcs to accept lnpt2. but no luck.
To be honost, I know enough about linux to be scary. I understand the su account from work (used linux as a user, never an admin)
can anyone give me step by step instructions as to what went wrong.
at one time,, it was set up on the network as localhost,, with the loopback address of 127.0.0.1. gave it it's own IP and haven't seen it sense.any help would be great.
oh yeah,, the router is an smc business class
with dhcp turned on
ThanksIf your not learning,, your just sitting there

You don't use local host. VM ought to have two interfaces. One is the localhost 127 and the other is the true virtual network.
Depends on the vm app. If you are running player then the text file would change how it connects. There are basically three ways to use a nic. The vm nic acts like the installed nic, the vm nic is a virutal nic. The vm nic is only able to connect to other vm's.
My guess is you don't have a driver to allow the virutal nic.
Are you using a pre-made virtual appliance from VMware? You should start with those.
"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10

There is a great deal of help available for Linux - Firstly we need to know what Distro of Linux are you using - Is it Redhat or Suse etc.and secondly the version Of VM - Then we need to know are you using static or DHCP IP/DNS Servers
You need to tell us if you are using the Open Versions or the Commercial Versions. Once you have established this you can start diving into any number of help mailing lists - For Example if you have OpenSuse you look at
http://en.opensuse.org/Mailing_Lists
Redhat has similar help - If you are going to remain using Linux I would encourage you to purchase the Open.nnnn Boxed Version - Its about USD50 and you get all the software and a printed Manuel and startup guided that is priceless when you start with any Distro
Good luck with Linux - It does start to make sense after a while and looking at all the email questions and answer moves you along very quickly ;-)Cheers

I do not think it is a problem in vmware adapter. I got the ftp server inside linux to work great. and got the internet client inside linux to work as well.
I am using vmware workstation ace edition v 6.02 on a windows vista ultimate network.
I am using Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, with samba pre installed. I assume due to setup that it is a commercial version.
I can even get the server to appear in the network neighborhood,, but cannot connect to it.
I have changed the setup on the machine from dhcp to be static, and it still will not allow a connection from my windows box'sThe linux networking is a bit tricky, the defaults for linux were networking numbers I had not seen, they were changed to a 192.168.123 address scheme.
Thanks
