Hi All,
I noticed that to get SAMBA to assimilate into a windows out-of-the-box configured LAN you have to make it part of the 169.254.*.* network. But i noticed yesterday that somehow all the computers in the house switched magicly to the 192.168.*.* network and all the linux boxes were now on a seperate network. Is there any way to remidy this in linux?
Thanks,
Ralph

Then you want to modify linux server's IP address???
Edit the files:
/etc/sysconfig
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0In /etc/smb.conf make sure new IP range is allow by samba.
and reboot

Yeah, I got that part. The thing is that the windows box appears to change IP's on every reboot. Sometimes on one sub-network and sometimes on the other. I want samba to appear on the network no matter what network the windows boxes choose. I don't want to bother all the windows users on the network to force a static IP. I just want SAMBA to consistantly appear on the network...
Cheers,Ralph

I would recommend first of all changing the DHCP server to keep it all in the same class of IP's. Its odd that they are fluctuating between a 192.168.*.* addy and a 169.254.*.* address. I am not sure why this is, you might look into the DHCP server, not the computers. Anyway, you said you didnt want to do this so on to another solution. Buy an additional 10 dollar nic card for your linux comp and put it in. Assign each alternate NIC a static IP from each 169.254.*.* and 192.168.*.* so it will appear no matter what. This is roundabout but it might work. Again this is kind of a rediculous idea, but i thought i might suggest it. The only possible problem that i forsee is that if you plug two NIC's into the same switch with 1 IP, it might create problems. I thought that through but it should be ok though. It will use noe of them as standard but accept connections on the alternate if another computer is trying to connect. Anyway, this is just a suggestion as i said, and if someone sees a reason that this wont work (which is highly possible) suggest it, or suggest something that makes more sense. hth
