I have been trying to get Samba to work now for two days and still have had no luck. Could someone post a copy of a working smb.conf that is working for them. I will change the names of my computers if I can get this thing to work. Please note any special directories that I may need to create and scripts if i need any. I would like the Samba server to act like a PDC. I am so frustrated with this I am ready to just go buy a copy of NT Server......I think the thing that I am frustrated with is that I know it's something simple but being a newbie I just can't get it going....ARG!!!!!
Here's a copy of my latest attempt from a HOWto I found at Samba.org
[global]
netbios name = Samba Server
workgroup = workgroup1
os level = 34
preferred master = yes
domain master = yes
local master = yes
security = user
encrypt passwords = yes
domain logons = yes
logon path = \\%N\profiles\%u
logon drive = H:
logon home = \\homeserver\%u
logon script = logon.cmd

[netlogon]
path = /usr/local/samba/lib/netlogon
read only = yes
write list = ntadmin

[profiles]
path = /export/smb/ntprofile
read only = no
create mask = 0600
directory mask = 0750

Thanks for your anticipated help.....I'll even amke the long distance call if you would think it would be easier!!! Let me know!!

I can see the server in the network neighborhood but that's it. If I double click on it I get a message saying "workgroup1 not accessible" "The nework path was not found"

If I try to change my W2K machine to access a domain using the computer account that I created I get the error message " The following error occurred validating the name "workgroup1""
"The specified domain either doesn not exist or could not be contacted"

That's it! can't do or get anything else.
Thnaks,
Tony

im not sure if it makes a diff but try to write workgroup1 in capital letters first of all; then...are the machines all on the same subnet?

"If I try to change my W2K machine to access a domain using the computer account that I created I get the error message [...]"

this will only work if you have a dns entry, so dont use that on local workgroups.

please check smb.log and nmbd.log for errors and accesses and post anything interesting.

I have tried changing the font to cps & lowercase. No difference. I have tried to change the security to share. No difference. I have changed the host name to the same as the netbios name. I have checked all addressing and it looks fine. I have looked in the log files and haven't seen anything peculiar except when it says the it has been elected on the subnet it refers to it's address not the subnet. Other than that I am still NOWHERE!!!!! HELP!!!!!

Guys thanks for your help. I really appreciate it.
Tony

LOL!
well, however the only thing that counts is that it works now and you will never forget to check your firewall rules again :))

it's ot

I've been working in public schools for 3 years as a tech and this year, this new school I'm in, it uses w98 clients and linux servers and samba, everything works fine, no crashes all win licences are paid to ms (in the other schools it was not this way) and open office is working on win98 clients.
All fine but it gets me so frustrated because I cant go into all those linux kernel thing tricks I'm very frustrated.
Will have to throw away my 7 years "experience" in win (what ?)
