Hello, I just installed a new Red Hat 7.2 server. I am having trouble browsing Samba shares from my Win2k Laptop. I get the error message "network path not found" however, the Samba server appears in the network neighborhood but it cannot be accessed.. any suggestions?? any help would be appreciated.. Thanks!

check how ur configured samba to lookup hosts in ur network. also map ur hosts in 2000 too ie c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts add ur entry in hosts reboot try hope it works now

in the global, add your window computer name in
hosts allow = your-computer-name
then restart your smb daemon

The other guys were a little off target Your problem deals with password encryption. You see Win2000 by default wants to encrypt your password. Linux by default wants it in plain text.
Point to consider. Win95 did not encrypt passwords. NT and up does.
There is a place in your Win2000 registry that will allow you to change it to do plain text. Or even better idea. In your SMB.conf edit it to use encrypted text.

I have the same problem as this person and I had already configured smb.conf for encrypted passwords and followed the RedHat 7.2 docs to create the smb password list.

I had same problems trying to browse Samba (RedHat 7.2) shares with Win2k. It asks me logon but don't go.So I enabled password encryption in samba but nothing.I think the problem is in creating samba password list too, but i don't know how I can do this!Someone can help me?
Thanks in advance.

i have this problem too. The reason this occurs is that when windows 2000 installs a printer it tries gives itself admin access. Samba/linux doesnt let it and hence the access denied message please e-mail if there is a solution.

Does anyone have a suggestion to solve this problem, other than the encrypted password issue. I have tried both ways and I cannot get either to work.

I had the same problem with Redhat7.2 and windows 2000. Here is what I did after I struggled with more than two days.
1.create a username on both the linux and the windows2000 with the same password.
2.At the command prompt of the linux machine type the following
%smbpasswd -a username
%smbclient -NL 'localhost\sharename' -U username. the localhost can be the linux hostname and the username the new user we created in step 1.
3.stop and restart samba.
4.make sure that you checked the backword comapatibility box when adding your linux machine to the windows 2000 directory services.
I hope this will work for you.

I'm having the same problem with WIN2K Pro and Solaris 8.
I thought of using the same user/passwd on both systems. But that didn't work. I created the samba password file in /usr/local/samba/private folder by using the ./bin utility included w/ samba package.
Testing the params on teh Sun side works great - I added teh sun box to /winnt/system32/drivers/etc/host file and can ping and view in NN. however when attempting to access, a access denied pop-up window appears.
I haven't tried encryption enabled but will tonight.
Other than that does anybody have a clue? Is ther a Key that can be edited in WIN2k to turn off encrytpion or to send in clear text - like a D_word entry somewhere?
