Tero posted this link a few days ago, but it sounded like a sales pitch.
Anyway, he's legit.http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html
It's a distribution of Linux called Knoppix (based on Debian)that runs completely from the CD.
I downloaded and burned it (yesterday) and was very impressed. I put it into a windows 2000 machine and booted off the CD. All of the hardware was detected and setup, and then I was booted into KDE. I could see everything on the hard drive.
This is a pretty nice tool for fixing broken computers. It's also a nice demo for those who want to try Linux but don't feel like installing it. It even has Open Office.I just wanted to spread the news for those who need a tool like this.
Thank you Frank Mimbs!!!
I re-read my post and I guess I did come across as a salesman except that I was trying to sell an idea - this software rocks, try it for yourself, you won't be disappointed.
I did mention it was free and I reposted the first guys post, then my own thoughts. I downloaded it cause of his post in the first place.
It still doesn't excuse the morons that made comments about me advertising. I don't believe they even read the whole post where myself and ms mentioned that it was FREE! This is a Linux forum and almost everything available for Linux is free.
I knew people would like it, how could you not appreciate the marvel of it.

I've been using it for a while but didn't
want to say anything yet because I am still
testing it... It fact, I have it running at
home right now so will see how long it can
stay up without rebooting!Lawrence

I burned this onto a CD this morning and it rocks! I wish my installations of Redhat 8.0 and 7.3 were this easy! Not only did it recognize all the hardware, but it was basically just as fast as a regular installation except for the slight pause before while the CD spins up!
I'm still trying to figure out how to mount NTFS partitions in Redhat 8.0 and this thing did it properly as soon as it loaded!
This is definitely the coolest adaptation of Linux or any OS that I've ever seen.

I'm pretty sure this works. Correct me if I'm wrong please.
mkdir /mnt/ntfs
mount -t ntfs /dev/hda /mnt/ntfswhere "hda" is your ntfs partition.

I don't believe there is any site in the US.
However, the one in Switzerland is a smoking
fast. Took me less than two hours to download
it, ISO file...Lawrence

Tero, I think that you have to recompile the kernel in Red Hat before you can mount NTFS partitions. I'm reading some tutorials on it, but haven't taken the time to go through the steps yet.
One thing I noticed about Knoppix is that the autoconfiguration will hang if the computer has a Firewire (IEEE 1394) card installed. I was able to get around this by disconnecting the card in my desktop, but the laptop doesn't give that option. I've seen that you can disable things like scsi devices, but can't find any info on disabling pci cards/buses.

IT'S AWESOME!! I love it! :)
But has anyone gotten the save configuration to a floppy thing to work? I save them but when I go to log in as knoppix floppyconf it just goes, and loads it default again.
help? DO I have to make the disc bootable or?

Another good Linux-on-CD is SuSE Live-Eval 8.0. It includes lots of programs, but no OpenOffice. Speed is acceptable, interface (KDE 3.0) is top notch, and it can read/write my entire FAT32 partition automatically. I would really like to be able to install more programs into it, but the package manager can't do it for me due to the hybrid nature of this distro. Does anyone have ideas?

You can save and restore the config to floppy and it works fine. The correct restore command is "Knoppix floppyconfig". (See F2 key menu.)
You can save the config to floppy from the Knoppix Menu.I can slide a 64MB PCMCIA adapter into my laptop and it is recognized as a disk. I wish there was some way to save multiple configs on the card and then select one at boot time.
Has anyone tried to set up the FTP server? I want to connect to Knoppix from an NT client, but Ive forgotten everything I knew about setting up a server.
Last time I checked, the Knoppix forum was still down. Too bad, because Klaus had a lot of good info there. Hope it comes back.

Knoppix, dled it, burned it, tried it :)
Nice tool, heh.Hey dude there's some US http site where you can dl it from. Just look under download section and you'll find it.
Hi
Is there a way to map a Windows share from a Knoppix? In other words, is there a equivalent command under Knoppix to the windows "net use" command.
Thanks
AnDre
