At the boot prompt try typing:
linux init=/bin/bash

If you press TAB a couple of times at the boot prompt it should show you a list of available images to boot, perhaps the default "linux" has been renamed....?

Failing that you can use a boot disk and blank root's password by mounting the root file system and removing the "x" from root's entry in /etc/passwd, eg change:
root:x:0:0::/root:/bin/bash
to
root::0:0::/root:/bin/bash
Now boot normally and log in as root with a blank password....don't forget to change it straight away though!
