HI,
I am a Rogers high-speed user (Toronto)
and I am trying to connect my linux box
to the internet instead of my windows pc.From some reason , I am not getting an IP
address when my LINUX is connected .
Someone told me that Rogers is checking the
MAC ADDRESS before assigning an IP address. My question is : HOW DO I CLONE / COPY THE MAC
ADDRESS FROM MY PC TO MY LINUX so rogers will think
it's my other machine .
(I know it's easy to do with most of the common used
routers , but I have no clue hot to do it with Linux)Thanks.
Jerry

I got a similar problem here too, my cable
modem won't allow diff computers to access
because the MAC address is stored in it. A
simple power off/on on the modem itself
resets the modem and solves my problem.
I've permanently got around this though by
buying a router.
That Rogers company is being retarded. What
happens if a person buys a new PC or
upgrades their NIC card, for whatever
reason. The user gets shafted when he/she
can't figure out the problem.
As for actually copying/changing the MAC
address, I'm not sure how to do this in
linux, or if its possible. I know some
windows NIC drivers allow changing the MAC
address however.

Hi,
I have had the same problem.
The Rogers DHCP server doesn't seem to detect it correctly when you issue a "release" command for the NIC.
It happened twice to me. I just asked their technician to do a manual reset on their end.
They didn't like it, because (as they claim) each time you do a release, you "block one IP address for a whole week". Go and figure out what they mean by that...
The rule is that I can do whatever I want and when I want with my hardware...
Give them a call if you still have the problem.
