I recently setup a new Linux Box with RH 7.1. The installation went smoothly; no errors. But when I try to ftp or telnet into it from my win2k pro machine, it will deny me access. I have my telnet and ftp servers running & installed correctly on Linux. I am using Kernel 2.4.5 & IpTables 1.2.3 as my firewall. But even when I disabled all firewalling, I was still not able to login to the Linux Box. The only ray of light has been my Samba Server on the Linux Box, I am able to use Network Neighborhood to access my user account from win2k and transfer files back and forth. I didn't have this problem with RH 7.0 only 7.1. Any ideas? If you need to know more let me know?
Jeremy

Hi Jeremy
1. The ftp will allow only anonymous access by defaults, so be sure you login with anonymous account.
2. telnet does not allow root access, so be sure you login as a different local user.
If you have installed linux with high security level, check your /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny files.
good luck.

Jeremy,
On another note, I recall some changes from RH&.0 to 7.1 involving SSH and Telnet. Telnet ports are *not* listening, by default, on 7.1. RH decided that SSH was a more secure environment so have defaulted to using it. Just enable listening on the telnet ports and you'll be good to go.

How would I go about enabling listening on the telnet port? I am having the same exact problem as above. Thanks.

I am certainly a neophyte with redhat.
while looking for a telnet solution, we found several answers but still have problems.
While the telnet ports have been enabled, they still do not allow a user login for established user accounts.
Any suggestions?
