Can anyone recommend software for running a remote desktop on an MS Windows machine? I'm wondering what X server most people use, or if stuff like VNC is better.

I haven't need a remote desktop under Windows since 1996, and I'm really out of touch now.

VNC is pretty good although you may wish to look at some of the others based on it (TridiaVNC is a good one) as their compression makes the connection a little faster. Once you've got that going, it will run the X server installed on the linux box and any window manager you wish. You can even view with a browser these days and a java client.

SSH supports X fowarding too, although I am unaware of a windows client that supports it.

TightVNC is an improved VNC. Very nice.

Use PuTTY for Win32 SSH and X forwarding.

I'm using XThinPro to run remote X server sessions. This way you can run specific linux apps on your win desktop rather than run the whole linux desktop.
