Comment:

I just picked up an oldlaptop. It has a 75 Mhz pentium 1, 540 MB HD, and 8 mb of ram. I want to set it up as a client to a remote desktop run by main computer (winxp). Mainly for web browsing and listening to mp3's (if i can get sound card to work). I would like to connect to my network using a 16bit pcmcia wireless card (haven't bought yet). I found RDesktop and Winconnect as two client programs to use. RDesktop looks like the easier one. My questions are, is this possible on this computer and what distro to use that will work on this computer's specs and have drivers for a 16 bit pcmcia wireless card? The laptop doesn't have a CD drive so it would be nice to find a distro that can be installed by floppies(I dont need huge packages since it will be just a client). I was looking at DSL, but I dont think it supports pcmcia. Otherwise, I might be stuck using windows 95.
If I cannot find something to work with pcmcia, then I will just use an ethernet card and use a wireless bridge(game adapter), but I don't want to do this if I don't have to.

8 Mb of RAM is not enough to run Linux. DSL has a minimum hardware requirement of 32Mb RAM

See http://www.desktoplinux.com/article... which shows that this is just not enough

Probablly 'MS-DOS or compatable' is the answer...

Finding a 2/4 16bit WiFi Card is nigh impossible, nearly all are CardBus 32bit.

What about grey cat linux? I might be able to use the wireless bridge and ethernet combo with that.

This HOWTO may help you:
http://tldp.org/HOWTO/4mb-Laptops.html
(Note that this is aimed at 4Mb laptops, you wont get all the bells and whistles like the latest desktop or office suite....but all you want is a thin client, you just need to choose your packages carefully)

You may also want to check you make and model (or similar) here:
http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/

Speaking of thin clients:
http://en.tldp.org/HOWTO/Thinclient...

If you don't want the hassle (and expense) of M$ TCALs for RDP, have a look at one of the VNC flavours around such as TightVNC....you don't need to pay for a TCAL to connect.
