I'm looking for some software that will let me remotely control my redhat system GUI over a network through a windows computer. I have tried using VNC but this wont allow me to see the GUI only the X terminal. Anyone know of anything??

I don't think you are using VNC correctly, then. You should be able to see your entire Redhat desktop (Gnome/KDE).

I'm using VNC and all I need to do is enter "vncserver" on the Linux machine, and Run the VNC Viewer on Windows (98) and enter the ip address of the Linux machine (host) and the display (:1), such as 10.10.10.5:1, to view the Linux (Gnome on Redhat 8) desktop on my Windows machine. To view the desktop of my Windows machine on Linux, I Run the VNC Server on the Windows machine and enter "vncviewer 10.10.10.15:0" (ip address of Windows machine:display) at a Linux prompt. Either way, I get the entire desktop of either machine.

I think your problem is entering a valid display (:0, :1, etc) when using host:display.

When entering "startx", you might want to try this instead:

# startx -- :2

This will use display 2 instead. Use 1 or 3 or whatever's available.

Good luck.

I think you really want to edit
~/.vnc/xstartup to include either
"gnome-session &" or "startkde &"
