Hi,
I need some help to reinstall my Mandrake Linux 8.1 LILO, please let me know.
I am dual boot win98se(in first hard disk),
Mandrake Linux 8.1 in 2nd hard disk).
There was something wrong with the LILO after I install norton antivirus program in windows. I couldn't load the LILO. So, I can't go in either OS. I use the fdisk type "fdisk /mbr" to reset the loader so I can load into windows 98. I believe my linux OS still in the second hard disk. Now, how can I reinstall the LILO without reinstall the Linux? I have reinstall my linux many times already because I didn't know the problem ( norton antivirus program). I have also read the Linux manual on how to reinstall LILO and I have tried it, but I still don't know what to do. The manual said to boot from the linux boot disk and in the (root) to do something like " /sbin/lilo ". I can't find the root. From the boot disk, it gives options to select the type of OS installation or "rescue" option something like that. I don't know what to do. I have also select the rescue in the boot disk menu and tried to find the root to resintall LILO, but didn't find it.I may have talk too much about my problem, but I want to give as much info as possible to anyone who can help in my situation.
Thank you for your help

Ya..Booting up with the RedHat intallation CDrom and choose for the rescue mode. Mount the Linux partition (mount /dev/hdaX/mnt). Change root (chroot/mnt). Change lilo.conf to some thing sane like
"boot=/dev/hda
timeout=500
prompt
vga=normal
read-only
default=linux
root=/dev/hdX
other=/dev/hda1
Label=win"
Install lilo (Sbin.lilo)
do a sync and unmunt /dev/hdax (sync & umount/mnt)
Reboot /sbin/reboot.Try..
Hope it will help.

Why use a Redhat installation CD?
... When I install my Mandrake Linux, I tried to boot from CD Rom, but it didn't work. And, I don't think it will work for Redhat CD either. It could be the CD Rom problem, but I don't think my CD rom is too old to boot CD.
If I don't use the Redhat installation CD, are there any easier ways to do it?

I fixed my LILO.
For anyone who has the same problem, you could try it.
Here's how I fixed it:
Just boot from Mandrake Linux 8.1 boot disk.
Then, I chose the graphical intall interface.
Follow the instructions.
When you come to the menu whether it's install or update, choose update.
Then, when it asked to select the packages you want to install, deselect all packages and click OK or whatever button to confirm.
It will simply continue the installation and it will install the LILO.
I guest that might be a way to resinstall the LILO.

No, this won't solve my problem since I have no CDROM on my old P75 notebook.
I have the same problem as kz. I first installed Redhat 6.2, then Win98. the latter override my mbr. and I lost access to Linux.
I tried GRUB as suggested from someone. But it demands my kernel name, which I can't get unless I could boot linux.
Any more idea? I have a lot of important data on Linux, so hesitate to do a reinstall over network.
thanks a lot for any tip.

Hi ka
I also had the same problem as you after reformating my Windows partition.
I did what you did several times and installed Linux Mandrake 8.1 each time.
I got fed up with this (Mandrake seems a bit unstable at times) so decided to tackle
it the right way.Boot rom your Mandrake 8.1 CD and type repair and enter
The screen tells you you can do chroot /mnt to fix liloat that screen press enter first
on the next screen type chroot /mnt
if you type ls you should see all the Linux directoriestype /sbin/lilo then hit enter
a few lines will appear
then type sync & unmount /lilo and hit enterignore any errors
then type reboot and hit entergood luck

I need big HELP... concerning a lilo boot wrecking two hard drives, not using the same OS.
A few months ago we installed a new harddrive on our Compaq computer, and put Mandrake 7.2 as the OS in that harddrive. The other harddrive was the normal Windows 98. In order not to have two computer, blah blah blah, we installed a lilo boot.
Everything was fine. Until...
The computer was trying to boot up, perhaps four or five times, and then it died.
So the technician said the Linux hardrive had died, but that he could still see partitions on the Windows'. We had a program (maybe Disk Recovery?), where we could see that there are still files available. But it seems as if the FAT is missing. So we bought a new harddrive and reinstalled Mandrake 7.2 on this one, and decided to see if we could look into the files of the old Windows' harddrive.
However, no files show up.
We tried to start lilo, and we get a warning/dev/hdb2 is not on the first disk, and fatal:first sector of def/hdb1 doesn't have a valid boot signature.
We had the hope that installing the same lilo boot program would make the FAT visible again. But no dice.
Two questions:
1.) How can both harddrives, not even connected to the same damned OS, die on us?
2.) Anything smart ideas you have for us on reading those FATS, besides plunking out a thousand bucks or more to some guy in a neat, white suit?
It would be super if you could give me some information. I lost a book I was working on, but more importantly, I lost the babybook of my Goddaughter!
