You can't get it back but there are a few ways you can change it - e.g. boot in single user mode (add "S" to the commandline from lilo or grub) then run passwd.

how can i boot in a single user mode? i dont have any other user except the root and some one has changed it. the problem is when i boot the system it is going to the login and iam not able to log on as i do not have the root password. so what should i do now. i think u got me. how can i get the lilo commandline and where to add S ,etc. pls tell me in detail. bye
