OS: RedHat 8.0
CPU/Ram: PII 350 Mhz / 32 Mb
Comment:

When I start my pc, everything goes fine, but when it exits the GRUB boot loader to start linux, the system suddenly reboots. Resetting and adjusting the bios doesn't help, nor does removing of some of the pci cards.

The strange thing here is that the same linux works fine when I install the disk in another pc.

Some specs: PC 1 (not working)
Pentium II, 350 Mhz.
32 Mb Ram
3 Hd's -- 10 Gb total
S3 Virge grafic card

PC 2 (working fine)
AMD XP 1800+
768 Mb DDR
MSI KT3 Ultra mobo
Gf 4 TI4400

Thanks in advance,
Vincent

Hi Vincent, I think that pc1 lacks the cpu , ram and graphics capability to run RedHat 8.0
Look at the minumumum requirements on the side of the box. 32 mb ram not enough 350 mhz cpu not enough. You could probably do a minimal install on PC1 and leave off X and alot of other packages and get it to run. I dont think you will ever get a GUI(Gnome or KDE) to run on PC1 with 32 mb of Ram. Maybe Winblows 95 or 98
I think you are beating a dead horse with PC1
Good Luck

I thing i'm getting some more ram, because the only thing I'm gonna use this pc for is a Samba/DHCP server and ISDN (maybe later broadband) router. I only need the GUI to configure this stuff (I'm a complete linux n00b :D), but when everything runs fine, I won't need the GUI anymore...

Thanks anyway,
Vincent

Vincent you only need Freesco to do what you want. It is a floppy base router/firewall/proxy etc. Runs on 16 megs of ram and a 486. It amuses me how people think that you need anything higher to provide this functionality.

There are many mini-distros that will do what you want. one is floppyfw it will run on 386 and 12 mb of ram has kernel 2.4.19 no X and no PPP but it will act as a firewall and a dail out and DHCP server www.zelo.no/floppyfw
It has no X so you would have to configure it from the command line
Nice little tutorial in the December issue of Linux Format and it may even be on one of the cover discs that come with the Mag. I get it at Barnes and Noble it cost 13.95$ in the USA
Good Luck and take Care
