I installed Redhat Linux 6.2 standard on the slave HD(1.2 GB) of my 486/dx-2/66 machine with 16 MB RAM.
I have Windows 95 on Primary HD.
I boot Linux from Floppy. My problem is Linux GUI runs very very sloooow. In text mode it runs good. Graphic card is recognized by system. Monitor is listed in the system but
gives error message when selected. So I selected agenereic monitor.Could this be a problem ? or Is 486 /66 too slow for graphic Linux.
Windows 95 runs good on this machine.
Any suggestions ? I am new to Linux.

I ran Redhat 6.1 on a PI 133 system, with 64 Mb RAM and I found that to be really slow in Xwindows. Upgraded the processor and RAM, and everything ran a lot quicker.

Redhat comes with both KDE and Gnome/enlightenment.All of them are "heavy"
for your system. You should have >64MB RAM
and a pentium is highly recommended.

If you use however another window manager
things should be O.K.Try Afterstep/blackbox/fvwm2 and as a last resort
twm.

here try this my fellow RISC 486er

Q: Do you have a PCI port?
A: Yes, Get a Faster Video Card 4Megabyte
At least it seems 486's choke a lot
from slow video cards...

After that you'll see a %45 increase
in speed and be able to run in 1600x1200x16bit.

Sometimes it dosent pay to upgrade to a
p133 or a DX4/100 i have...

Intel P120
32Mb RAM
3.2Gig IDE DMA/33 (DMA/66 Compat)
6x CD-ROM (In pieces)
SiS JOYIMAGE 170Mhz RAMDAQ 4MB Accel
32bit Creative SB AWE32
Corel Linux/Win 98

Enough Typing im tired...

Night and hope a new v/card will save
you some money.
