There is no definitive way to answer your question; it depends on your ISP and your hardware. In general though: The first thing you have to do is get your network card talking to the cable modem, if it isn't already. After that, you need to know whether you connect to your ISP via DHCP or a static IP. If you're behind a gateway/firewall, that begs more questions. Try the Ethernet HOW-TO and the Cable Modem HOW-TO at www.linuxdoc.org. These are pretty general documents, so they may not address all of your questions, but they *are* a start.
