Comment:

I just installed RedHat 8.0 three times and am getting the error message, about to the end of bootup, saying "bringing up loopback interface". Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks

do you see something like this:

Bringing up loopback interface [FAILED]

or do you see something like this:

Bringing up loopback interface [ OK ]

If you see OK, then there is no problem. If you see failed, you can check (as root) the file /var/log/messages and see what the specific error is. That file will have a lot of information, but since you said it happens towards the end, then I recommend you go to the end of the file and see what you can find there.

When I get the "Bringing up Loopback interface"
there is no other data displayed. It simply locks up.
Thanks

I have the same issue. It is caused by the network driver. In my case I have a sis900 NIC on a Asus P4S8X motherboard. I'm still trying to locate someone with an updated driver, supposedly linux kernel 2.5 has an updated driver. Unfortunetly Redhat 8.0 is kernel 2.4.

You can get your system running (without the network) by pressing "I" during the interactive boot section. Watch the boot messages for "Entering Interactive Setup" then press "I". You'll then get the opportunity to run or skip each item. Answer NO to "Network" setup. This is were loopback gets started. I'd also answer NO to sendmail, it might hang also.
